Image size
Hey Slushe admins, is there any way to increase the max file size for uploads? More often that note I'm unable to upload PNGs as they always exceed the max limit of 8mb. The images do suffer quite a lot as a result. Even if we could up it to 10mb (though ideally 12)?

Hey there Powerup3dx,

This request has been posted to the list for phase 2 rollout. However, I have at this time no update with regards to the actual implementation .

May I ask what tools  and/or methods used you currently use for uploading, compression, etc.? Thanks for your understanding!

Thanks for replying, good to know it's at least being looked into. Not sure what you mean by uploading tools? I prefer using PNGs for best image quality, but invariably have to downgrade/convert to JPGs to squeeze under the size limit.

Sorry just meant compression tools, perhaps I could suggest https://saerasoft.com/caesium/ The app provides decent results and worth a look see.

Can I add to this topic?

I see the huge file sizes as a problem. It takes so long to load a single PNG image in 4K and loading gallery of those it's just impossible for people with low bandwidth.

It would be nice to have built-in compression and resizing feature on Slushe. Especially for small thumbnails and previews, they are unreasonably large.

So, my proposal is to implement something on the website to reduce the image size for faster browsing. And a button for the uncompressed original file download or something like this.

Simply put, it would be cool if Slushe was fast :)

Now it's really slow, mostly because of huge PNGs that take forever to load.

I will put this to the team.

The dev team are in the process of addressing the speed issue.
Since the content is free, (and I applaud that on this site) and easily downloadable, my sense is that a 1500 wide pixel image is fine for viewing purposes, while retaining the value of higher resolution images as products in the linked sites that offer them. Just MHO

On the file formats:

PNG is great when there's a lot of plain colors, or if you need an alpha channel. But tends to be really heavy sized when dealing with sensor noise, film grain, gradient tones, etc.

In my own experience: a good JPG file has quality enough to be displayed on screens, and you won't see any noticiable blocking artifacts or color loss.  And as a user I'd go 100% for a quick marginally lossy image than no image because of load times.

I noticed when uploading my first pics that the max image size is 8 MB. If I upload several pictures at the same time, is there max for the total size of all the pictures? I tried to upload 3 pics at the same time, but only 2 were uploaded.

The more images you are uploading in a post the longer it will take to process the images before you click to finish the post.

But you should be able to upload over 100 images per post quite comfortably,  just be patient and let the images finish processing,

otherwise when you click to finalize the post you will find images missing.

I am OK with the current image size limit. Slushe is slow enough as it is. Slushe Doom Scrolling is bad enough without oversize pictures.   My JPG quality is set for 93% and saves lots of space while maintaining Bitmap quality. 100% JPG is slow and much larger than 93%. If you take the time to experiment, you can create a small size 4K JPG with zero artifacts if you take the effort to try numerous JPG compression values.

Please Slushe, never implement WebP image format.
