“Where are we?”

Laura smiles. “We are entering a beautiful cave full of naked warrior women who are all attracted to each other and who desperately need male attention.”

“The online mercenary recruiter said you were all just indigenous farmers who taken up arms in revolt,” Samo says.

“Don’t believe everything you see and read online,” Laura says. “Sign up for trouble, and you will get used and ruin your life. Then they have you for good because you have nowhere else to go.”

“That is the way the gangs work in my home city,” Samo says. “They pressure you, lure you in with money and girls, and get you to commit crime for them when you are so young you can’t be charged. Then once you have a record, no school or job will touch you and you have to join their gang.”

“That is the way the rich elites work online,” Laura says. “There is a global system of indentured servitude that the investments of the ruling class depend on, slave labor built on the backs of human misery, and they have to tear down worker protections and human decency to keep the pyramid scheme from collapsing. One hand starts a war in one region, the other strips away worker protections for their sub-living wage refugee workers they funnel into markets. Then they turn around and take the land the war freed up and strip mine it for resources.”

“Our entire region has been subject to corporate and imperialist forces who exploit us,” Samo says. “Nobody here has any hope of a better life.”

“Then President Romano is your friend,” Laura says. “He may be a bit of a socialist dictator, but his heart is in the right place when it comes to preserving the land and protecting the culture and history of his peoples’ home. I suspect this whole coup attempt is to install a more business friendly ruler and exploit this area’s natural resources.”

Samo nods. “Is he like those socialists online?”

“Those are not socialists,” Laura says, “those are tools of the machine who say things to make you feel good, but they are mouthpieces in the pocket of the elites. They are a lot like the people who lied to you and hired you to do their dirty work. The President is a good man, a bit of a jerk, but still, I respect his bravery to fight for his people.”

Samo nods.

“Here is a tip for you to get you through life.” Laura sighs. “Trust what people do, not what they say.”

“I am screwed. I am a criminal mercenary,” Samo says, “in a foreign land. The President will not have mercy on me.”

“I will put in a good word for you,” Laura says. “You have taken a big risk in exposing what these evil corporations and their online cronies are up to. If you help us, I am sure he will find forgiveness in his heart. Maybe even give you a home.”
