How to start commissions (and profiting off your work)?

So with summer upon us and nothing happening for me until the Fall semester begins, I was thinking of starting trying to get/do commissions, but I confess, it's a bit of a daunting task.  I figure there's some established people around here that already do commission work and I was wondering a few things about profiting off your artwork.

1) How do you go about pricing?  This is a huge one for me 'cause my initial write-up was extremely low (like $10-$15 for a character portrait or something) and pretty much everyone I asked was like "Yeah dude increase that 'cause you're underselling yourself".  The current one I have I basically copied (and lowered the prices of) from Intrigue3D, with the high end (custom character, first time making said character) being $30.  I've not done commission work before so I want to try to start low (so it's attractive and affordable) and then look at increasing the price as I get going, but I'm not sure if this is a solid way to go about it.

2) What's the best/most reliable payment method?  I understand that Paypal has issue with money for porn (or I heard it does anyway), so I was wondering if that's an actual issue, and if so if there's a good alternative?

I'm kinda flying blind here 'cause most of the people I've talked to about pricing commission work usually handle digital drawings and such as opposed to 3D renderings, so the pricing suggestions are kinda skewed.

I would probably talk to those that are already producing commission work,  ask them how much they charge,

that'll give you a good starting point.

I'm not sure if this will help 8 ways to accept online payments

Just make sure you have selected you do commission work in your availability tab in your edit profile.

I think you have already but just in case, go do it lol

I've been doing commission work for almost 10 years now working in 3D. What's going to get you noticed is the quality of your work. Be active on social media, promote your work via art galleries like here, deviant art, hentai foundry, etc. You can use paypal just don't list it as "hey I'm doing porn! Notice me!". Just list it as "Art Commission". I actually wrote an article about this a few years ago on Affect3D. Here's the link:https://affect3d.com/3dx-artist-resource/art-business-3dx/

Thanks for this valuable input

Sorry for the necro, but I've been wondering something about this topic and didn't think a new thread was needed.

I've been considering doing commissions but being in the dark about a few things prevent me from taking the plunge.

Basically, what kind of commissions can I expect to get most of the time? Not talking about specific fetishes, etc, but mostly about the characters. I mean, I see that most 2d artists usually get commissions like "I want this movie/anime/comic/etc character doing x with this other character", or "draw my character from a fiction I made and/or a scene with that character". Is it the same case for 3dx? If it is, do people take into consideration the, let's say limitations, of using Daz for that? For example, to faithfully recreate a very unique character and/or a very unique suit a 2D artist still has to do the same, you know, draw it. And I think even easier because now you have lots of references. For 3dx, you'd need to model it yourself and well... I don't imagine many people modeling a character and suit from the ground for 30$ or around those prices...

So, do people make that kind of request from Daz users, and if they do, are they flexible about what to expect from the final product? I mean, sure, I can whip up a character that looks decently similar to, let's say, a Witcher's character or a superhero like Wonder Woman. Or work with them to make a character of their liking. But if someone would ask me to make, let's say, All Might from Boku no Hero, I guess I could get a similar face and body, the hair and eyebrows though... not going to happen without some modeling.

So, in short, I guess I don't know what to expect from clients' expectations, so I'm not sure I'll be able to meet them.

I guess it is one of those questions like "which came first the chicken or the egg?"

I don't think you will know unless you get asked.

But, that being said, I would probably imagine 'Futanari' might be a good guess.

Heh, "very much" fine by me xD

Well, mostly was wondering about how "forgiving" usually clients are about accuracy in case of existing pop media characters, but I guess that's one of those situations I'll just have to take the plunge. I suppose making a portfolio would help too, to establish what to expect from me, so it's time to model some existing characters instead of only original ones... after I'm done with the Halloween renders :)
