Reach 2 (Laura, Lana)

May 06, 2020

The previous picture did not convey what an amazing pose this is, but I needed it to establish the characters.

This gives me chills when I see how dangerous this is. I could see snapping this while holding onto the cliff for your life, so even the camera position helps tell the story.

I had to make some framing adjustments to get the negative space I wanted, re-rendered three times to tighten up the focus. Sometimes your first try lets you see things you never did, and it is easy being happy with a first pass. The keys here here to get the bare minimum contact points established, that grasp of the hand being her entire life, and that feeling of vertigo and motion. I had her right leg off the screen, and that hurt the composition by giving her body an anchor it wasn't supposed to have. Pull the camera back. The rocks above her blocked that sky and the beautiful negative space, so those had to go back as well. And the final redo was Laura's hand was blocked and was not clear.

Without Laura's hand she would be doomed. She is exposed and out in the middle of nowhere. Really a fun and powerful piece about trust and challenging yourself.
