Cal was gone, his ship out of the system. The connection she had felt until a moment ago had vanished, and only a vast void of silence remained.

Kerrin sighed, leaning against the wall outside her home, where she could still stare at the stars as if that was going to change something, make him come back somehow.

She knew it would be months until he returned - if he ever did. It was a dangerous world out there, and a dangerous life they both lived - and no telling if and when their paths might cross again.

She knew all that, told herself to forget about it - forget about him, at least for the moment. But the more she tried to forget, the more her body remembered him…
